The first few days and weeks with your new baby are a time of adjustment and recovery. As you get to know and learn how to care for your baby, it is also important to take care of your own needs. Your body has just done a huge job and you will need time to rest, recover and get to know the new you. Having someone else there to help you through this period will allow you time to rest and build confidence.
Daytime support
Every mother, baby and family is different, and it's not possible to predict exactly what type of support you may need, so this is not an exhaustive list, but these are some of the things that I can do for you as a postnatal doula:
- Offer feeding support
- Help you gain confidence with bathing, dressing
and caring for your baby
- Teach you how to use your car seat
- Offer babywearing support
- Listen to the story of your baby's birth
- Make you something to eat or drink
- Talk through any concerns you may have
- Look after the baby while you take a nap or shower
Overnight support
Babies wake up several times during the night for feeds and nappy changes, and in the early days after the birth this can be exhausting. So that's where I come in! I will bring the baby to you when they wake up, so you can feed them in bed, and then I'll change their nappy and settle them back to sleep. This means that you can stay in bed and get as much sleep as possible, so that you and your partner will be ready for the day ahead!
